As you all know, Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 teaser trailer roared onto the internet last night (courtesy of gametrailers.com). But there is so much action packed into that 28 second clip that we just had to do a frame-by-frame analysis to see what we can glean about the game’s story and gameplay.
In this first screenshot, we see a SWAT or military unit moving out of frame. Two huge clues tha tell us the setting of this scene are identifiable. First, is the Russian lettering on the side of the van. Second, is are the Russian colors on the patch of the soldier. Additionally, this scene looks like it takes place at an airport.
So we know some part of this game takes place in Russia, which is great to hear because we love their vodka and their no holds barred attitude. When it comes to real-life hostage and terrorism situations, it always seems like Russian police and military shoot first, ask questions later.
In this next frame, it’s important to note that there may be some gameplay involving riot shields. Or at least let’s hope there is, because requiring blast shields when moving in only means that there are bullets (and projectiles) flying!
This frame shows more clearly that there is a ton of action that happens at an airport involving the Russians (more likely, that it takes place at a Russian airport). We’ve got an image of a well-armed dude without the Russian patch on his arm, so we’ll assume this guy is the terrorist/suspect.
But we’ve got some interesting action going on here. The left engine of the airliner is clearly on fire, but the question is, did someone get sucked into it to cause it to explode? In another frame, we see a piece of trash/debri floating towards (and presumably into) the flaming engine. Something (or someONE?) must have gotten sucked into the engine!
Next is a scene that looks like it takes place at the same airport. There’s a fuselage that looks like it was either not fully attached to the rest of the plane, or something cut it cleanly off of the rest of the plane. To the left of the fuselage, we see an exploding Hummer. And in the background, we see more airplanes, but they could be fighter jets, judging by the apparent exhausts.
Our next frame shows us part of our potential cast of characters. From left to right, we have Mohawk Dude, Skull Mask Dude, and Helmet Dude. They’re jumping from rooftop to rooftop in some unknown location.
In the following frame, our dudes are jumping towards a helicopter, but clearly, they are jumping down, not into the helicopter (the hatch is closed). It may not be important, but it is notable that in the previous frame, Mohawk Dude was on his right side, and not in the middle of the group.
Here we see a nice close-up of a knife-wielding killer, dressed for the arctic. There appears to be at least one (possibly tw0) guys in orange jumpsuits in the background. Orange jumpsuits? For some reason, I just think: nuclear power plant. This is just wishful thinking though. Edit: Eagle-eyed reader, senor barrigas from the Xbox.com forums pointed out that the dudes in the orange jumpsuits look more like hostages – and upon further review, we agree! They look like they have bombs strapped to them!
This screengrab shows a firefight on a ridge. On the left, there’s a dude that appears to be throwing an object – perhaps a grenade. The two other circled items are projectiles hitting that truck.
